Well with an indoor car show coming fast for my 68 Camaro, had to finally get to work on the winter updates/fixes. The big thing is getting my original rear seat restuffed and stretched and also replacing the original 50 year old carpet. So today was the start of the carpet replacement. The rear was easy to remove, the center console is a huge pain to remove, taking two people to wiggle it out. The carpet itself came out pretty easy. While it looks decent in pictures, the 80/20 loop had really let go and was fraying and fuzzing. It had also seem to have shrunk a little because at the seam for the pieces a gap had formed exposing some of the floor.

Along with the new carpet also decided to add more insulation to try and keep the interior temps down a little in the summer. That’s the odd cut pieces are in some of the pictures.

When the old carpet was pulled that side of the floor pans saw their first light since being covered with the carpet on the assembly line in March of 1968. For all that time they are near perfect, the rear footwell on the driver side had a little surface rust so scraped that and put some rust stop on it then some paint. Also resealed the drain plug.

At the end of the day was able to get the new carpet laid down and the lower part of the console in. Tomorrow, ill get the console all the way in and then let the carpet settle while i wait on the rear seat to get back. Then trim the edges and lock it down.

It is premolded but being stuffed in a box for shopping and cold winter temps, it was a little stiff when laying it back out.

Looking good!

The Chevelle needs new carpet, but that will just make me want to fix the seat more, which gets expensive and time-consuming very quickly.

Yeah, ive been putting off doing the rear seat for years because I acquired a factory fold down rear seat (it was an option) and it needs a cover, but once I started adding up the cost to actually put it in, lots of extra things that go with the seat, ill just get my perfect original seat restuffed, ill keep the fold down for the future.

I have the issue of having a dark Jade non-split bench with cloth inserts, which is torn, and I have not found anywhere that makes covers for that combination. I really like the bench, but it almost tempts me to go for period buckets (then I wouldn’t end up in the passenger’s seat on a left turn, too).

oh you still slide in the late 60's early 70's buckets. I slide all the time in my 68. It would be a different look to see a 4 door Malibu with chevelle buckets and a console. Could build a “what if” 4 door SS car.

I have considered buckets and a console. I did just recently swap the powerglide for a muncie :)

I suspect the buckets are a little less slide-y though, no? I actually do think the fabric inserts on the bench help a ton too, since you ‘stick’ to it rather than just slip around on vinyl.

no there is still no bolstering on the era buckets, they are pretty much flat on the bottom and backs. you will slide like the bench, the buckets just look more muscle car. The fabric is more comfortable in the summer, vinyl gets super hot and then you stick to it.

As I continue to slowly tear down my ‘68 Camaro, future carpeting & insulation is on my mind.

When I drove it up here from Arkansas, it sure was hot & loud - especially over the transmission tunnel.

What insulation did you go with? The carpet in mine was fairly new but didn’t seem to be the greatest quality, yet was obviously a fitted 2-piece set meant for the car.

Yours is still looking good! I think I bought that same steering wheel. Does it make it tough to get in and out?

More case to keep the bench, then!

Let me know if you stumble across any dark jade non-split bench covers with the cloth insert :)

The insulation is from ACC and it’s a stock style 7 piece kit. There still isn’t much on the tunnel, and if you have a factory console you can’t really put much there and keep the fitment. Then my carpet kit is also from ACC. It’s a little money, but it’s made in the USA and the quality shows. It’s laid out really well over other carpet kits I’ve dealt with.

As for the steering wheel I don’t have any issues getting in and out, I also have a factory tilt column though.

I was afraid you’d say that about the tunnel area. Oh well, I might have to do some experimenting when I get to that point.

Tilt column you say? Hmmm. Gonna have to take a closer look at mine to see if I overlooked something. But maybe it just didn’t have one.

if you have a tilt column there is a lever behind the turn signal lever that’s a little shorter. If you pull it towards you it unlocks, keep it pulled towards you then the wheel will swing up and down to your liking, then simply let go of the lever, it pops back and the column locks back into the closet detent.

With the tunnel you could cut and form some insulation around where the console sits to cover it the tunnel better.

Cool. I’ll check it out the next time I’m over at where my Camaro is stored. Thanks for the info.
